Flute

Daniela played with the AYWS for one year while attending Chattahoochee High School. After graduating, Daniela pursued a B.M. from Columbus State University in 2014, received her M.M. in 2016, and will receive her D.M.A. later this year from the University of Iowa! During her studies she has served as a teaching assistant at the university, teaching undergraduate flute performance majors and a course in instrumental techniques.

Daniela has only great things to say about her time at AYWS. Playing with the group exposed her to new repertoire and allowed her to form connections with other talented musicians in the Atlanta Area. She remembers how enthusiastic Dr. Stewart was, bringing the kids in the ensemble to achieve a higher standard of music than anywhere else. While at AYWS, Daniela’s favorite piece of music was Profanation by Leonard Bernstein, as the changing meter and unique harmonic language was unlike anything she had performed before.

On why she thinks AYWS’s pursuit of musical excellence in its members is important:

“Music is an all-encompassing art form that has ties to history, religion, science, math, etc. and transcends all languages and cultures. But more importantly, music teaches people about hard work, dedication, commitment, and teamwork. Even if a career in music is not the goal, so much can be learned from studying and devoting some time to music.”
