Dalton Corbin
Clarinet
Dalton Corbin first met Scott Stewart when he was in seventh grade at a District Honor Band weekend. He went on to become a member of AYWS for three years and participate in the New York tour and performance in Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center:
“Aside from the concert venue being a dream come true, what puts this one over the top was that I actually remembered to bring the Eb clarinet on that trip (applied learning from a previous mistake—which I’m still sorry about that Savannah debacle, Dr. Stewart).”
Dalton holds a B.A. in Music (clarinet performance) and Biology from Emory University, and a Master’s of Public Health and Masters of Administration from the University of Georgia. His current position has taken him to San Francisco where he analyzes clinical, operational and financial data for the Permanente Medical Group, with the goal of improving care delivery.
Dalton has many happy recollections of AYWS:
“Being a member of AYWS is certainly a challenge, so I think you are pushed to grow faster and further as a musician than you ever would have been playing at school alone. Along the way comes an exposure to a wide range of definitive wind band literature plus an engaging education with bits of music theory and historical context, too. I think my years in AYWS certainly laid the groundwork for what would eventually become a full music degree at Emory. I owe a heightened sense of curiosity to the fact that being in AYWS stretched the bounds of what I thought was possible for me as a musician, but also on a personal level. I think that type of enrichment is so valuable during your high school years.”
And on giving to AYWS:
“You’re not going to find a better cause. Youth arts education can always use support from the community—especially now as budgeting for the arts has become an all too familiar target of school systems throughout the country. AYWS offers a high-caliber experience that is intensely rewarding not only for its players, but their audiences as well.”
